4 Reasons Why Setting Clear Time Limits On Your Work Increases Productivity On Your Side-Hustles
People think that putting more daily hours in a project will make them progress faster — that is a myth.
In the last 3 years, I have always worked on a side-project, and I discovered that I made more progress when I was swamped at my day job.
This sounds counter-intuitive, but it makes sense because, during those times, I had to set clear time limits of a maximum of 2 hours every day for my projects. Here is why this works:
1. It creates urgency
There are people for whom quitting their job would make them LESS productive on their side-hustle, and this is precisely why: Now they have all the time in the world to do it, and so they do nothing.
The more urgent something is, the more focused you will be to solve it.
2. It makes you have clear priorities
If you don’t have clear time limits on how much you can work on side-projects, you will wonder and explore endless possibilities.
When you know you have a tiny time window, you cut out everything that is a nice-to-have and focus only on must-haves.
3. It makes it easier to start working
This is one of the reasons why the Pomodoro Technique became so popular: If you can’t get into the zone after 25–30 minutes, you can quit and do something else.
It is easier to start something you know will take a short time than to create something all day.
4. It gives you time to relax and recuperate
Now that you are working less, you will have time to focus on stimulating activities like sports, family, friends, or hobbies. Having all of these areas in check will boost your output in the long term.
